to use the heart form as a basis for creating an object which would be beautiful when viewed from any of an unlimited number
of perspectives. Starting from a mere two-dimensional image of two opposed simple curves, it has developed into a three-dimensional
study of infinite serpentine compound curves (a sister concept to Hogarth's "line of beauty"), with a sub-theme
being the interplay of convex and concave surfaces. The design received a U.S. patent in 1987. The
idea for the phallic sculpture arose from my fascination with the erect penis, coupled with the realization that it offered
another and even richer display of gorgeous lines and hills and hollows, not to mention the appealing challenge of depicting
a naturalistic erect phallus complete with balls. All ivory material was acquired before 1980, long before the U.S.
ban on ivory imports of 1990.
